Why Am I Here?!
Updated: Jun 17, 2020
You don’t know me today. You might not ever. I am really not sure why I am doing this or how long I will keep doing it but maybe we can figure that out together. So here we go.
I have never believed much in sharing details of my life with other people but then I had a daughter and wanted to tell the world all about her. Well, had is the wrong word. I obtained a daughter. See my wife and I have yet to be blessed with children that are genetically ours, due to physical limitations that I will get into another day. But we have still been BLESSED with 3 healthy, beautiful, amazing, little children. And through those children I have found parts of myself that I never would have dreamed I had 5 years ago. One of those parts is a poet, and that poet loves to tell my daughters stories. Stories about her mother, stories bout her brothers, stories about herself, anything she will listen to.
My overly supportive wife convinced me to write one of those stories down and try to submit it as a children’s book. And that ultimately lead me here. This experience has been eye opening in a lot of ways. I was born to an electrical engineer and a math teacher. My father raised me with the ultimate expectation of being an engineer like him. Which I absolutely love, don’t get me wrong. That upbringing however did not result in a lot of emphasis on the arts. There is a lot more to this process than I thought starting out. Not that I thought it was going to be easy mind you but it is way worst than I thought it would be. For those of you who have never tried to get a book published before, let me give you a glimpse of what I mean. Did you know that if you wrote a book you in general don’t eve submit it to a publisher if you want to get it published. All the contact is done through a literary agent any more. Heck, (excuse my language) you don’t even submit them your book. Just a one page explanation letter of why they should consider representing your book. Can you imagine trying to sum of the Lord of the Rings in one page? Not even one page really. You need space for your greeting and sign out and a short bio about yourself. Could you sum up your favorite story in half a page and bet your lively hood on it? I don’t have the guts to do that, that is why I still have a day job.
Almost worst yet, is the other side. I wrote a children’s story, my whole book is barley a single page double spaced and you want me to write have a page about that. I can sum up my entire story in one sentence. I still managed to squeeze a paragraph out but that is just because I like the sound of my own voice, or keys in this case. But whether that will be good enough is yet to be seen. I will let you know when I hear back for the agent I am submitting to. I promise to keep updates going at least that long.
On top of the fact that you have to submit a summary of your work to someone, so they can submit it to a publisher for you. Authors also have to most of the marketing for their own books. Nobody really thinks about it but you never see advertisements for the first book in a series. At least not until the movie comes out. No, there is no marketing for books. Which means that authors have to go out, shake hands, kiss babies and convince people that it is worth their time and money to read their stories. So on top of spending countless hours writing a story, then more time convincing a agent to represent them, and then waiting months(best case) for that agent to find a publisher that will accept the book. They THEN have to go out and sell the darn(sorry again) thing themselves.
If you are wondering where I am going with this I am almost there, so bare with me just a little longer.
Most of this self advertising has been simplified by the use of social media. Someone with a strong online presence can get the word out to hundreds, if not thousands, if not millions of people in seconds. So naturally a strong online presence is something that book agents look for. I mean if I owned a billboard company it would be a lot easier for me to get people attention right. Unfortunately for me, I have intentionally avoided having any sort of online presence up to this point in my live. But that all changes today. SO HERE I AM WORLD, NICE TO MEET YA.
But more on that another day, in the mean time I hope this message finds you in good health and sound mind. I am just another confused father from Kansas wondering...
HOW DID I END UP HERE?
